When I was first approached with the idea to sell ancient coins, I dismissed the idea because I had no clue what they were, how to grade them or what the demand for them was. That was 1996. Ebay was selling ancient coins at the time, but that was about the only place to buy them. Now almost 10 years later, the eBay market has grown from a handful of sellers and modest buyers market to a booming section with over 2000 sellers and a buyer demand that is stronger than ever with high repeat business ratios. Why haven't you gotten into Ancient Coins?

Could it be that you bought some and you found nothing but crusty frail pieces of metal with no real visible details? Or maybe you did find some with detail, and you tried grading them using modern grading methods, and decided that they aren't worth the money? Maybe you just aren't knowledgable of Ancient Coins, and its too much to take on right now?

Now think about it the way your average customer will. They walk into your coin shop with a $10.00 bill in their pocket, ready to be spent. Could you even sell them a MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR, of any grade? Maybe they will just buy a few Buffalo Nickels, and a poor quality Half Cent. They'll go home, throw the coins in a container with the other coins they collected and forget about it. No excitement, no sense of wonder, and only a small sense of history.

Now take the same $10.00 bill, ready to be spent. They buy a VF Constantine the great, a G Vespasian, and 3 uncleaned coins they can take home and scrub for a week. Now they are excited, and amazed that they could buy a 1500 year old coin but they couldnt afford a 120 year old coin, and certainly they won't forget so easy. Chances are they will be back in as soon as they have cleaned those 3 coins. Now they need a book to identify them, and see what bargain they lifted from you right under your nose! REPEAT BUSINESS!
